Anxiety

While anxiety is a normal response to threatening situations, anxious feelings can also produce unpleasant side effects such as panic attacks, sleep disorders, somatic symptoms or avoidance behaviour.

When a person is faced with a situation that generates too much anxiety for him/her, he/she might resort to various strategies in order to abstract him/herself from this unbearable reality.  Hence, obsessive compulsive disorders, such as checking, excessive washing, counting, repeated acts, mental rituals, hoarding or unwanted images and thoughts, can be understood as inefficient attempts to protect oneself against anxiety.

The therapeutic work will therefore be focused on gradually learning new strategies to manage anxiety in a more effective way.
